Back To Al Rihab

Brief

In this workshop, participants explored the intersection of architecture and narrative through both literal and experiential mapping of the Al Rihab Complex. Participants were taken on a guided tour of the iconic building in the heart of Hawally and were encouraged examine the building’s diverse realities—lighting retail, gaming/electronics, and residential spaces—each offering distinct experiences. By merging creative writing with illustrative techniques, the workshop encouraged participants to craft unique narratives and visual maps that reflect their personal journeys through the building. This approach emphasizes understanding architecture as more than just a structure, but as a host of coexisting yet separate realities.

Outcome

Participants worked on creating a short narrative based on the flash fiction writing method based on their reflection of the building drawing from memories and juxtaposing them with the felt experience during the tour. Their findings were transformed as experiential maps and illustrations embroidered on fabric.
